息子が部活動で狂言「蝸牛」を披露する
わが息子が部活動で４年前から狂言をやっている。今回披露したのは「蝸牛」という有名な曲でした。５００年前の古い日本語でセリフをいうもので、オラにはちょっと分かりにくいけど、あの声を聞いて、はっきり言って、しびれた。いつものと全然違う。
蝸牛のストリーが面白くて、アクションもたっぷり。でも、何よりも、息子の努力に感動した。よく頑張った
あの狂言の声、どっから来ているんだべ？
My son performed Kyogen recently at his school. He has been doing this tradional Japanese comedy art-form for four years now. I think he has that distinct Kyogen voice down pat.
Kyogen started way back in the 1500s as a sort of comic intermission to lighten the atmosphere of the stricter and more moralistic Noh theater performances. Recently, it has gained a following among modern Japanese in its own right.
Last time I went to a Kyogen performance in Tokyo in 2009, it was sold out months in advance, and the audience was full of young women. And this art form is over 500 years old. Now THAT’s star power.

山形湯野浜温泉の「いさごや」のおかみさんと
２月末に「おはよう朝日」のロケで山形の庄内・最上地方に行ってきました。美人レポーター熊谷奈美ちゃんと最初に取材したのは、かの有名な宿、「いさごや」でした。日本海に沈む夕日を眺めながら、ゆっくりとかけ流しの露天風呂でくつろげる湯野浜温泉のスポットの一つ。サイト見れば「いさごや」のことが分かる。

Reporter Nami Kumagai and I went up to the Shonai Region of Yamagata for a report for “Ohayo Asahi”. It will air on ABC in the Kansai region on March 17th. First off, we visited the famous hot spring inn “Isago-ya” in the Yunohama Hot Spring resort area. You can watch the sun set over the Sea of Japan from the open air bath before tucking into the “kaiseki ryori” dinner featuring fabulous seafood caught locally.
渡会酒造の新酒を試しのみーー完璧です
次に行ったのは庄内地方有数の酒倉「渡会酒造」。ちょうど新酒が出来上がったところでしたので、さっそく。
Next, we visited Watari Sake Brewery, which boasts a history of over 300 years. But they are not resting on their laurels. The brewmeister has developed both a sparkling sake which taste just like champaign, and a sort of hyper distilled sake whiskey which reminded me a lot of the Chinese liquor “Shoko-shu”. Potent stuff. Completely habit forming.
「寝覚屋」で山形そばと「むぎきり」を試食
寝覚屋でそばと「むぎきり」のコンボーを試食。
東北の麺類といえば、山形に板そば、秋田の稲庭うどん、盛岡の冷麺、白河のらーめん、などが有名ですが、「むぎきり」というのもある。「ほうとう」とか「きしめん」よりはほそめだが、歯ごたえはしっかりとある。
太さは、んだね、宮城県と福島県の「うーめん」に近いかな。
とにかく、んめ〜〜ん。
「寝覚屋」のおかみさんと
Next we hit a local soba shop ” Nezame-ya” for lunch.
Yamagata is well-known for its soba, or “buckwheat noodles”, and rightfully so. This shop however has added a twist. Their most popular item is a combination plate of cold soba and cold “mugi-kiri” (literally “wheat cut”). Mugi-kiri noodles look sort of like slender udon noodles (also made from wheat flour) but are flattened out a bit.
You would think they would be rather soft after boiling but that is not the case. Nice and chewy. We thought they were great.

２０１０年２月１２日に新潟県立大学で講演をしました。
テーマが「国際交流入門」でした。
大学の教室で講演するのは、ちょっと久しぶりでしたが、国際関係学に熱意を入れている大学だから、学生さんはすごく良く話しを分かってくれた。
外国人の先生も何人かもいらっしゃいました。在日外国人の体験談の話をしましたら、皆さん、うなずきっぱなしでした。
その日、天気は寒く、大雪が降った翌日。めずらしく、新潟市内はかなり雪がつもった。５０センチ位かな。
にもかかわらず、期末試験後の休みにも入っていたにもかかわらず、集まりも良くて、オラにとっても、楽しい講演になりました。
もともと、女子大学（現代、共学だけど）だから、新潟ビズンも多かったせいか、オラ一生懸命だった。

Becky is another one of my favorite actresses
Becky and I worked together on the set of “Nodame no Cantabile” in France in late 2008.
She is really versatile. Not only can she act, but she can work as a commentator, caster, reporter, really anything. And she’s funny to boot.
Wish I had half her talent.

「ぶらり途中下車の旅」２００９年新春スペシャル
「２００９年のトップ・バッターとして富士山の美しい光景をめぐるため、御殿場線を取り上げた。
スタッフと一緒に何日間つったらぱったらしました。
御陰さまで、天気にめぐまれて、富士山をばっちり撮れました。
最後のシーン、伊豆半島の戸田から撮った「赤富士」はオラにとっては初めてだったから、とっっても印象的でした。

比嘉まなみさんと「どんど晴れ」の打ち上げで
NHK２００８年朝の連続ドラマ
「どんど晴れ」の主人公、比嘉まなみさんと貴重な写真が出来ました。
この写真真夏に撮ったから、二人ともすずしい格好しているけど、その前の年、秋頃から岩手県内のロケで寒い思いが多かった。
One of my favorite actresses in the whole world — Manami Higa, the lead in the NHK morning drama “Dondo Hare” in 2008.
She is rapidly moving onto bigger and better things. I wish her all the best.

朝日放送の「おはよう朝日」宮根さんとの花見２００８春大阪
２００８年の大阪での花見会はかなり盛り上がりました。
アナウンサーの宮根さんは、東京マラソンを５時間以内に走らなければ、自分の頭をボーズ刈りにする。
残念なことに、ちょっと努力が足りなかったか、約束通り、まるくしました。
でも、いやなやつだな。マルボーズにしても、似合うんだな。

This is my buddy Seiji Miyane, one of the busiest TV personalities in all Japan. This photo was taken during our annual flower viewing party at a park down in Osaka for the staff of “Ohayo Asashi” (“Good Morning, Asahi”). Miyane-san had just given himself a “buzz-cut” as penance for failing to finish the Tokyo Marathon in under five hours. He had made a promise to do so on a live TV program, so . . . . I guess self-inflicted public humiliation is the path to stardom in Japan. I’ll have to try that someday.

親父が消防士だったという縁で、オラ、いろんな日本の消防士と消防団のイベントに参加させていただきます。

This is one of my favorites.
I played the part of a priest for TV drama back in 2005.
Those are real vestiments and we shot in a real Church up in Saitama, just north of Tokyo.
The resident priest advised me on proper movements of the hands, etc.
Having been raised Catholic, this was quite memorable.

パックン君とクッキング戦争
名古屋のクッキング・ショーでなんと、パックンと腕比べになっちまった。どっちが日本通か、すごい競争になりました。
結局、このとき、オラ負けた。（パックンの方のおにぎりはちょっとだけ形が良かったとの判定でした。納得いかないけど。）
外タレ同士の「漢字王クイズ」では、オラが勝ったけど。
でも、パックンって、本当に日本の事くわしいよ。漢字も良く書けるし、
よー勉強してる。
This is a snap shot of Pakkun and me on a competetive cooking contest down in Nagoya. We traded barbs in Japanese while making “o-nigiri” (rice balls). It was a lot of fun. But he beat me — the judges thought his rice-balls looked a little more sophisticated. Mine were too rustic I guess.
That’s OK though. I beat him at a Kanji (Chinese characters) competition once on late night TV (despite the fact that he probably knows twice the number of Kanji that I do).
