産經新聞が毎年やっている「高校生文化大賞」入賞作品が発表されました。全国の高校生から応募鵜した作文の中から十人が入賞。今年のテーマは三つでした：
「私の好きな街角」
「私と家族」
「世界における日本の役割」
オラも審査委員の一人でしたが、皆さんの作文を読んだら、オラより遥かにうまい文章が書いてあるから、ちょっと審査するのがはずかしかったです。皆、よぐ頑張ったなっす。 おめでとうございます。くわしくは、産經新聞で。

僕の卒業パーティは半端じゃねー
３月２３日の夜、「おはよう朝日」のオラの最終回の前夜祭に卒業パーティをやってくれました。皆さん朝はいつも早いというのに、こんなに元気。
オラも元気だった
まっ、オラもそれなりに。めちゃおいしい刺身に、かに、牛肉のたたき、すし、等々。それに熱燗の立山。
魚を沢山食べた御陰か、気持ちはとっても「フィッシュ」
いつもまじめな三上さんまでも盛り上がりました。公表出来ない写真も沢山ストックしている。
とにかく楽しかった。皆さん、ありがとう。
不慣れなオラだけど、８年間も可愛がってくれて、「おはよう朝日」のスタッフとキャストの皆さん、
本当にありがとうございました。 また、会おうで〜。
テレビ東京「土曜スペシャル」で相模川ハイキング

相模川ハイキング・コースのスタート地点４月３日放送分

テレビ東京 (TX) の「土曜スペシャル」
今回探検したのは、神奈川県の相模川です。
都心からこんなに近いところに、こんなにいい景色が見えるという事、オラ初めて知った。
まるで、山形に里帰りしたような気がした。
かたくりの花いっぱい
まんづ最初に訪ねたのは「かたくりの里」。
橋本駅の２番乗り場から臨時のバスに乗ってたった１５分で行ける。３月中旬から４月中旬の間、次から次へと春の花を満喫できるスポット。
かたくりをはじめ、めんずらしい花をいろいろ植えはじめてから、５０年も経っている。
とにかく、すんばらしい花のコレクションだ。
ちっちゃくてかわい花も一杯。
I did a travelog gig for Tokyo TV (TX) recently. That’s channel 12 for those of you who live in the Kanto Region. The program is called “Doyou Special” and it airs every Saturday evening from 7 PM.
On April 3rd, the broadcast will be about local “hiking courses in the Kanto Region”, in other words, near Tokyo.
I helped with one of the reports. We went to the Sagami River in Kanagawa Prefecture, just west of Tokyo.
めんずらしい椿もある
We started off by taking a bus from Hashimoto Station to the “Katakuri no Sato” (lit. “The home of the Dogtooth Violet”). It’s a privately operated flower garden with dozens of different varieties of Spring blooming plants.
The big draw is, of course, the Dogtooth Violet, which is the first purple flower shown above. It blooms in profusion around this time of year and covers half of the whole mountain. Quite a sight.
The Dogtooth Violet faces downward when it blooms so they gave it sort of a nickname “Hatsukoi”, which means “First Love”. I guess the bloom looks like a shy teenager who can’t seem to find the courage to tell the object of his affection about his feelings.

Anyway, this garden is an explosion of color around the beginning of April.
The guy who runs the place gave me the tour. He ticked off the name for each flower and a bit about its history and when they first planted it in this garden, etc.
Real nice guy but I am afraid I don’t process information as quickly as I used to. I’ve already forgotten many of the names for these flowers.
Just enjoy the photos.

There were dozen of people with cameras taking photos of all the flowers. There is also a lady there who teaches people how to actually draw flowers and make their own personalized post cards. I tried my hand at drawing a Dogtooth Violet. The result was mediocre so I won’t post it here. But it was fun to try.
花の名前は全部覚えられなくても、写真をいっぱい撮ったから、どうぞゆっくり見てけらっしゃい。

「かたくりの里」のあとは、相模川ハイキング。
いい季節です。河原沿いにかなりワイルドに咲いている花が沢山。
３月２０日、撮影に行ったとき、一番目立てたのはこれ、ショカッサイ(諸喝采）という紫色の野草。
Later, hiking downstream along the Sagami River, we took some time to film this field of purple wildflowers called “Shokassai”. That’s the official name in the reference books anyway.

The locals apparently call it “Daikon no hana” (lit. “White radish flower”) which is a lot easier to remember.
Anyway, you can probably spot this flower all over Japan except the far north.
正式正名はショカッサイだけど、地元の方々はこれを「大根の花」と呼んでいるらしい。
ん、その方が覚えやすい。
相模川沿いに釣り堀もあった。
相模川沿いに見るものが沢山。
花、キャンプ場、バーベーキュー場、アユ釣りのおとり売り場、水鳥、等々。
釣り堀までもあった。
Lots to see hiking along the river. Flowers, a campground, a little shop selling “decoy sweetfish” for the upcoming fishing season, lots of waterbirds, etc., etc.

割烹旅館「旭屋」の美人おかみさんとツーショット
旅番組ならではの不可欠のところは、やっぱし御馳走。今回最初のうんめ〜もんは、なんと「ダチョウ料理」老舗の旅館「旭屋」で６年前からダチョウ料理を出し始めたそうですが、あまりのヘルシーさにお客さんは大喜び。
でも、グルメ・レポーターの舌をごまかす事は出来ない。
食べてみたら、本当にヘルシーだけでなく、めちゃくちゃおいしかった。
普通の鶏肉と違って赤身なんだ。なにに例えれば悩んだが、鹿肉と鴨肉と間ぐらいな感じかな。

The really “tough” part of being a travelog reporter is
eating absolutely fabulous food. We visited a traditional Japanese style inn called “Asahiya” which has been in business for close to 200 years. Their usual fare consists of locally caught river fish and locally gathered vegetables. But starting six years ago, they began serving ostrich meat dishes to their health conscious guests.
The ostriches are raised locally in Sagamihara City.
I had never tried ostrich before. I was suitably impressed. It’s sort of a cross between deer and duck meat.
側沿いに「望地弁天」という弁財天さまがいます
通りすかったら、望地弁天の社を管理する方が、たまたまいらっしゃいまして、開けて下さった。年に２回ほど、掃除するためにしか開けないそうですが、これがラッキーだった。ちょっとめんずらしい弁財天さまです。手は８本、頭の上にまたもう一つの頭がある。
We stumbled across a little shrine along the river just as the caretaker was passing by. He allowed us to peek in to see a very unusual statue of Benten (also called Benzaiten). It has 8 arms and a smaller head on top of the main one. Sort of reminded me of the Juichi-men Kannon you see here and there around Japan.
そろそろ、４月上旬位にシバザクラも満開
最後に「瓢禄玉」（ひょうろくだま）という川魚料理の老舗の「ますのからあげ」と｢ます寿司」をいただきながら、相模川沿いにある土手のシバザクラを眺めた。オラの一番好きな花かも。
We finished up the program again enjoying food — deep fried trout and trout sushi, both of which were wonderful — while viewing another bank of flowers along the river. these are called “Shiba-zakura”, literally “lawn cherry blossoms”. Best time to see them this year is probably early April.
埼玉県鶴ヶ島清風高校で講演

鶴ヶ島清風高校の前で話しをした
３月１８日に埼玉県立鶴ヶ島清風高校の皆さんの前で話しをしました。「国債化社会に勝ち抜けるために」を題名に。
やっぱし、３０数年前、オラが初めて日本に来た頃と現在は全然違う。その昔、外国人が日本の地方に現れる事はなかったから、オラを見て、たまげた人は多かった。
でも、今、国際化が進んで、山形でも外国人がたくさん住んでいるし、世界中どっこ行っても、日本人のいない土地はない。すごい時代だ。
こういう時代に生きている人はやっぱり外国人と時々付き合わなければならない。でも、どうやって？ そのテクニックを皆さんに話しをした。

I got to do a little speech at Seifu High School in Saitama on 3/18. It’s been a while since I spoke to high school kids. They were a good group though. Very attentive. Not a single one fell asleep.
I spoke about how Japan has changed and become so much more internationalized over the last 30 years. And how they can best communicate with the many foreign people they will inevitably come into contact with during their lives.
I wish we had had a bit more time so that they could have asked some questions. H.S. kids usually love to ask me things about the TV industry. Unfortunately, we were pressed for time. Good luck, you guys.
NHK「ごきげん・歌謡・笑・劇団」収録

この前、５月７日放送の「ごきげん・歌謡・笑・劇団」
の収録をしました。ロケーションは栃木県芳賀町民会館でした。
クイズもあり、コントあり、もちろん歌はたくさんあり。
I participated in a program for NHK’s BS-2 Channel on 3/15 called “Kimimaro’s Full Course — Upbeat Song and Comedy Troupe”.
It’s a full scale “variety program”. We had a quiz, we had a comedy skit, and of course, lots of Enka (ballad singing).
Since the show is not going to air until May 7th, I am probably not supposed to give out too many details about who the guests were, what they sang, etc. Rest assured, if you are INTO Enka, this is the show for you.

岡山県高梁市でなつかしい光景

大学生の時代を思い出す
３月１４日岡山県の山奥の高梁市に講演しに行ってきました。オラにとって、なつかしいところです。
大学生の時代、この町のわきにある臥牛山（がぎゅうさん）の備中松山城を見物しに行ったときの話し。お城を眺めながら、日が暮れようとした。仕方がなく、お城のとなりにテントと建てて、そこで寝る事にしました。（大学生の時代はあっちこっちに旅しました。でも、金はなかったから、ヒッチュ・ハイクしながら、野宿する事も多かった。）
ところが、このお城のまわりは日本猿の大きな群れのねぐらだった。食料はおにぎり一個しか持っていなかったオラだけど、猿達がそれに嗅ぎついてきて、一晩中オラのテントを襲って来た。
オラの左後ろに見えるのが、その臥牛山です。久しぶり高梁市に来てその山を見て、なつかしくてしょうがない。
I made a speech down in the City of Takahashi in Okayama Prefecture on March 14th. This place has a sort of special memory for me. The mountain behind me is called Gagyu-san and there is a small mountain castle near the top called Bitchu Matsuyama-jo. 31 years ago (during a short break from my college classes in Osaka) I visited this castle while hitch-hiking through this part of Japan. As it turned out, I got to the top of the mountain just before sunset, and decided to pitch my tent right next to the castle for the night.
Unbeknownst to me, the castle grounds also served as the sleeping grounds for an absolutely HUGE troop of Japanese monkeys (macaques). The only food I had with me at the time was a single rice ball that I was saving for breakfast. I guess monkeys have a good sense of smell because they attacked my tent all night long trying to get at it. And, man, are they noisy when they’re hungry.
I laugh when I think back on this experience now, but it was pretty scary at the time.
東京湾でイベント

遊覧船からレインボー・ブリッジを見
３月１３日（土）東京の晴海客船ターミナルで「水辺で遊ぼう」というイベントに参加しました。日本の河原、海辺などもっと知りたい、もっときちんと守りたいと思っていらっしゃる方、３００名が集まり、水辺をより近づきやすいものにしたいとしているNPOなどの団体の発表会を聞きました。オラも日本の水辺のすばらしさについてちょっとお話しました。
始まる前と終わった後に、船に乗って東京のウオーターフロントを楽しみました。夜景は最高でした。
水面から見るレインボー・ブリッジは格別
On March 13, an event was held at Tokyo’s Passenger Ship terminal called “Let’s Play on the Waterfront”. (I know, the English translation of the event’s title doesn’t exactly inspire awe.) Anyway, 300 people interested in learning more about Japan’s waterfront areas were treated to various demonstrations by NPOs and other groups who are working toward making the waterfront areas of Japan more accessible to everyone. I was asked to say a few words about my thoughts on Japan’s very beautiful waterfront areas.
The event included two boat rides for everyone down the Sumida River from Akasaka in the afternoon, and around Tokyo Bay in the evening. Very enjoyable. Lots of young families with their kids too.

狂言発表会

息子が部活動で狂言「蝸牛」を披露する
わが息子が部活動で４年前から狂言をやっている。今回披露したのは「蝸牛」という有名な曲でした。５００年前の古い日本語でセリフをいうもので、オラにはちょっと分かりにくいけど、あの声を聞いて、はっきり言って、しびれた。いつものと全然違う。
蝸牛のストリーが面白くて、アクションもたっぷり。でも、何よりも、息子の努力に感動した。よく頑張った
あの狂言の声、どっから来ているんだべ？
My son performed Kyogen recently at his school. He has been doing this tradional Japanese comedy art-form for four years now. I think he has that distinct Kyogen voice down pat.
Kyogen started way back in the 1500s as a sort of comic intermission to lighten the atmosphere of the stricter and more moralistic Noh theater performances. Recently, it has gained a following among modern Japanese in its own right.
Last time I went to a Kyogen performance in Tokyo in 2009, it was sold out months in advance, and the audience was full of young women. And this art form is over 500 years old. Now THAT’s star power.
Opera and Shakespeare. Eat your heart out.
「おは朝」の山形ロケ２／２０１０

山形湯野浜温泉の「いさごや」のおかみさんと
２月末に「おはよう朝日」のロケで山形の庄内・最上地方に行ってきました。美人レポーター熊谷奈美ちゃんと最初に取材したのは、かの有名な宿、「いさごや」でした。日本海に沈む夕日を眺めながら、ゆっくりとかけ流しの露天風呂でくつろげる湯野浜温泉のスポットの一つ。サイト見れば「いさごや」のことが分かる。

Reporter Nami Kumagai and I went up to the Shonai Region of Yamagata for a report for “Ohayo Asahi”. It will air on ABC in the Kansai region on March 17th. First off, we visited the famous hot spring inn “Isago-ya” in the Yunohama Hot Spring resort area. You can watch the sun set over the Sea of Japan from the open air bath before tucking into the “kaiseki ryori” dinner featuring fabulous seafood caught locally.
渡会酒造の新酒を試しのみーー完璧です
次に行ったのは庄内地方有数の酒倉「渡会酒造」。ちょうど新酒が出来上がったところでしたので、さっそく。
Next, we visited Watari Sake Brewery, which boasts a history of over 300 years. But they are not resting on their laurels. The brewmeister has developed both a sparkling sake which taste just like champaign, and a sort of hyper distilled sake whiskey which reminded me a lot of the Chinese liquor “Shoko-shu”. Potent stuff. Completely habit forming.

東北の麺類といえば、山形に板そば、秋田の稲庭うどん、盛岡の冷麺、白河のらーめん、などが有名ですが、「むぎきり」というのもある。「ほうとう」とか「きしめん」よりはほそめだが、歯ごたえはしっかりとある。
太さは、んだね、宮城県と福島県の「うーめん」に近いかな。
とにかく、んめ〜〜ん。

Next we hit a local soba shop ” Nezame-ya” for lunch.
Yamagata is well-known for its soba, or “buckwheat noodles”, and rightfully so. This shop however has added a twist. Their most popular item is a combination plate of cold soba and cold “mugi-kiri” (literally “wheat cut”). Mugi-kiri noodles look sort of like slender udon noodles (also made from wheat flour) but are flattened out a bit.

You would think they would be rather soft after boiling but that is not the case. Nice and chewy. We thought they were great.
新潟県立大学で講演

２０１０年２月１２日に新潟県立大学で講演をしました。
テーマが「国際交流入門」でした。
大学の教室で講演するのは、ちょっと久しぶりでしたが、国際関係学に熱意を入れている大学だから、学生さんはすごく良く話しを分かってくれた。
外国人の先生も何人かもいらっしゃいました。在日外国人の体験談の話をしましたら、皆さん、うなずきっぱなしでした。
その日、天気は寒く、大雪が降った翌日。めずらしく、新潟市内はかなり雪がつもった。５０センチ位かな。
にもかかわらず、期末試験後の休みにも入っていたにもかかわらず、集まりも良くて、オラにとっても、楽しい講演になりました。
もともと、女子大学（現代、共学だけど）だから、新潟ビズンも多かったせいか、オラ一生懸命だった。
