今日、栗原はるみ先生が家に来た。オラはNHK 国際の番組「Your Japanese Kitchen」を撮るため、先生のところで何十回もお世話になっているけど、今日、特別企画で、その番組をオラの家で撮った。いつものスタッフの皆さんなのに、なんだか緊張した〜。特に緊張したのは女房かも。

The “charismatic housewife” Ms. Harumi Kurihara, known as the “Martha Stewart of Japan” came to my place today. She has published quite a number of very popular cook books in several languages.  She and I (and the very talented George Williams, of course) work together on the program called “Your Japanese Kitchen” on the NHK International Channel.

Usually, we shoot this program at her home/studio, but today we tried something different and shot the program at my apartment. I was a bit nervous even though I already knew all of the people involved.  (You never know when they might discover the odd cobweb you missed.)



Getting into it


だって、栗原先生は、料理研究家で有名だもん。女房は自分の料理テクニックに先生がなんか文句付けるなのかな〜って心配していたみたい。無意識でも。

でも、心配する事はなかった。先生はテレビに出る時と変わらない、そのまんまの人間じゃ。冗談言ったり、やさしく教えたりする。女房がリラックスしてはるみ先生と楽しく料理の話しとか（オラに対しての不満話しとか）出来た。

I think maybe my wife was more nervous than I was.  I mean, gosh, Ms. Kurihara is -like- the biggest star in the cooking world over here in Japan. What if she spots something mistaken about the way my wife cooked?

What if my wife cuts the vegetables at a 47 degree angle rather than a 42 degree angle?

Egads! We’d NEVER live that down.

But, of course, I jest.  Ms. Kurihara’s way of cooking is actually very similar to my wife’s.  They are both very busy, career oriented women.  As such, it is imperative that they strive to be efficient in every aspect of their lives — including cooking.  They both use quality ingredients and flavorings.  They don’t spend much time measuring things or cutting to precision.  They already know where they want to go BEFORE they begin.  Like I said, they are organized.
今日の一番面白いポイントは料理スタイルだったかな。栗原先生と女房はすごく似ているな〜と思った。
二人とも仕事で忙しく、料理するときはやっぱ速い。いい材料と調味料を使ってるから、あまり細かく測ったりしないね。こだわりはあるけど、なんちゅうか、大体「かん」で動く。
それだ。二人とも、料理の上手な母親から料理を習ったから、なんだか「本能」みたいなもんかな？


今日の御馳走はこれ


Both my wife and Ms. Kurihara were taught cooking by their formidable mothers, so they don’t waste any time while cooking. “Get it done, and move on the next chore”
would seem to have been their motto.
It’s almost instinctive.  And it’s a joy to watch.  I wish I had half of their skill.
Anyway, here are the two dishes we introduced on the program today (right hand side).
Beef and eggplant simmered in miso AND Natto-jiru.

「シャキーン」の壷の歌；今日録音

おっと。格好つけて


今日、NHK の近くのスタジオで「シャキーンの壷」を録音しました。

それが、１時間講演した後でしたから、なかなか声が思う通りに出ねー。（しゃがれるよっす。）

でも、明るいヂレクターとスタッフの御陰さまでなんとか無事に録音出来たー。

子供向きの番組用の曲だから、けっこうパンチも入れた。

１１／８からスタートのコーナーです。ちっちゃいお子さんお持ちの方は、是非ともNHK教育テレビ、見てけらっしゃい。


高いところがきっつ〜



Today, I went over to a studio near NHK to do the actual recording of “The Song of the Jug of Shakeeeeen”.

Man, what a job! Only a one minute song or so, but to get it “just so” take almost three hours.

It’s a song for a kids’ program, but so much work goes into it.

We tested several different keys to make sure that the song “fit” the image of the “jug”. Then we experimented with a standard Japanese version versus a “Yamagata dialect” version, and even an “Edo-ben” version.

A lot of work, but it weas really a lot of fun too.

Hope the kids like it.

自宅で一生懸命に練習している

１１/８～　NHK教育　毎月曜日７：００～７：１５「シャキーン」レギュラー出演

えらいこった。NHK教育テレビの番組「シャキーン」の歌覚えなくちゃ。

歌手でもないオラ、譜面も読めないオラ、だっちゅうのに、無理矢理にこんな格好。

まっ、かわいい歌だから、頑張っぺ。

I got an unusual gig tomorrow.  I’m going to record a song for a kids’ program on the NHK Educational Channel.

The program is called “Shakeeeeeeen” and the song I will sing is about this huge jug that appears out of nowhere to listen to the “real” things that kids want to say.  They put their head into the jug and reveal what they are really thinking about their parents, or about school, or their friends, or boys, or girls.  Every week will have a different topic.

By the way, I’m the jug.

NHK BS-2

この前、５月７日放送の「ごきげん・歌謡・笑・劇団」
の収録をしました。ロケーションは栃木県芳賀町民会館でした。

クイズもあり、コントあり、もちろん歌はたくさんあり。

I participated in a program for NHK’s BS-2 Channel on 3/15 called “Kimimaro’s Full Course — Upbeat Song and Comedy Troupe”.

It’s a full scale “variety program”. We had a quiz, we had a comedy skit, and of course, lots of Enka (ballad singing).

Since the show is not going to air until May 7th, I am probably not supposed to give out too many details about who the guests were, what they sang, etc. Rest assured, if you are INTO Enka, this is the show for you.

比嘉まなみさんと「どんど晴れ」の打ち上げで


NHK２００８年朝の連続ドラマ

「どんど晴れ」の主人公、比嘉まなみさんと貴重な写真が出来ました。

この写真真夏に撮ったから、二人ともすずしい格好しているけど、その前の年、秋頃から岩手県内のロケで寒い思いが多かった。

One of my favorite actresses in the whole world — Manami Higa, the lead in the NHK morning drama “Dondo Hare” in 2008.

She is rapidly moving onto bigger and better things. I wish her all the best.

NHK「親の顔が見たい」ジョージ・カールと共演



この番組もある意味でちっと恥ずかしかったよな〜。

２００４年頃の写真。

親父のジョージ・カールがオラの子供の頃の話、全部ばらしちゃったよ。

でも、大好きな親父だから、許せる。

オラもちょうど撮影の時期、久しぶりにひげをはやしてみた。

親父も引退してから、ひげをはやし、

なんだか、うりふたつの親子になちゃった。

This is one of my favorite shots. NHK brought my Dad all the way over to Japan to be on a program called “Oya no Kao ga Mitai” (“I want to see the face of this person’s parents”). He told them all sorts of stories about me when I was a kid. Mostly cute stories, some just a tad embarrassing for me, of course.

The best part of this photo for me is that both of us are sporting beards. My Dad grew his after retirement, and I had grown this as a “test beard” to see how it would play on TV. My first since college. Unfortunately it didn’t last long. Guess I’ll have wait till I retire.

すくすく赤ちゃんのテーマソングも歌った

すくすく赤ちゃんのテーマ・ソングも歌った


いちを、歌手じゃねーんだけど、「すくすく赤ちゃん」のテーマ・ソングも歌ったよ。１９９６頃、出来るだけかわいい声を出してみた。

エンヂング・テーマ・ソングだから、ちょっと聞き覚えのある方、少ないかも。


My big debut as a singer???  Not exactly.

Having lived in Japan as long as I have, of course, I’ve done my share of embarrassing myself singing Karaoke.  What can I say?  It’s a bit of an ego trip to sing “Hotel California” in front of a bunch of screaming drunk people.

Anyway, the producers of “Suku Suku Aka-chan”, a program about raising children on the NHK Educational Channel,  were so impressed with my voice that they asked me to record the ending theme song for the program. Since I was one of the emcees of the program at the time, it would have been bad form to refuse.  So, here’s the shot.

NHKの吉本アナウンサーと「すくすく赤ちゃん」


１９９６頃から４年間、NHK教育テレビの「すくすく赤ちゃん」の副司会をやりました。

はっきり言って、吉本めぐみアナウンサーが難しいところを全部やって、オラがわきの方で赤ちゃんの癒し役だった。

大学の教授の方や子育てのエキスパートがすばらしい話をしていただきながら、オラがスタジオに来た赤ちゃん達が泣かないように色んな芸を見せた。

結構、生の客席の前のパフォーマンスの勉強になりました。

A shot from the set of “Suku Suku Aka-chan”, a program about child raising on the NHK Educational Channel.  I helped host this program, geared mainly toward young mothers, along with Megumi Yoshimoto, a seasoned NHK veteran. She taught me all about class.

I have to say though, that my main job on this program was to keep the little kids in the background entertained so that they would cry too much during the filming.   Not an easy task.
